Farming and animal husbandry though can be financially rewarding when done correctly is not as straight forward as you might think.

This is especially so in Somali Peninsula where there are number of unique challenges.

These challenges vary from one region to another many are too familiar for Somalis engaged in agriculture and livestock husbandry.

These include lack of evidence based advisory services on crop or soil types and diseases, lack of appropriate advice on farming and irrigation methods and best practices.

And even though the vast majority of Somalis are known to have been pastoral for over a millennium, much of the knowledge used to manage livestock herds are wrong or outdated.

For new farmers, the potential risks to investment do not end there. In many regions across the Somali peninsual there are woeful lack of rules, regulations and enforcement on farming and livestock inputs.

So sometimes working out what is appropriate and what is not can be steep and a painful learning curve.
